Greetings Readers!
Signing Is Art has been extremely busy on a new project! The project is called Deaf Artistry!! It's an event that is open to the community on Saturday, Aug. 26th from 5-9pm at The Mahogany. The Mahogany is located at 190 Minerva St, Tonawanda, NY. This event is catered to promoting hearing loss awareness.
Our President/CEO, Kamil Gerald who is hard of hearing wanted to educate the community on hearing loss awareness and assuring that accommodations are accessible. Ms. Gerald shares her own experiences navigating through the hearing world with limited to no accommodations. She's no stranger to experiencing communication barriers. In fact this is what propelled her to create Deaf Artistry.
Ms. Gerald hopes this event will shine a light on inclusivity. Her goal is for the community to see outside of their perception about the deaf community in which there are some amazing people who are deaf and became successful. The deaf community strives to be like the hearing community in terms of they can do the same things as their peers, but just with accommodations in place for them. Having a disability doesn't make them any less of a person. So with this event coming up, we are hoping the community will see the deaf community for the unique person they are.
Deaf Artistry will have many different kinds of arts present by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. This is a great event for the community to integrate with one another as they get to know one another. This is how we emulate and teach inclusion. Promoting hearing loss awareness goes a long way and it teaches people how to interact and communicate with the deaf community. Although we have ways to go, this is just the beginning in establishing a strong diverse and inclusive community.
Accommodations will be provided at the event. There will be live ASL performances, free food, 50/50 raffle, and so much more. So come on out and have some fun while witnessing beautiful art in 3D format. That is so cool. Best part is you can pick up a few art signs yourself while there. And I promise you the deaf community will not bite. We are some of the nicest people you've ever met who will more gladly to teach you an art sign or two!
